九. 水涨船高—ballard 船闸见闻(3/22/2010,下午) 春游西雅图的最后一个景点就是去看船闸,西雅图船闸的正式名称是“Hiram M. Chittenden Locks" , 因为它的位置在西雅图的Ballard 区,所以简称Ballard 船闸,西雅图本地人叫的就更简单了,就称“locks" 。众所周知,西雅图多水,外有普吉海湾(puget sound) 通向太平洋,内有硕大的华盛顿湖(washington lake), 早先华盛顿湖与海水是不相通的,后来为了货运方便,修了一条华盛顿湖运河,因此又多出了上篇讲到船屋的联合湖,使得船只可以在湖里和海湾之间通行。 由于华盛顿湖的水位与普吉海湾的海平面有落差,因此船闸在这里的作用就显得至关重要。它的主要作用有三:1.维持华盛顿湖和联合湖的水位,它们的水位比海水位高20-22英尺。2. 防止海水淡水混合。3. 帮助船只从一个水域进入另一个水域。船闸是1917年7月4日开始使用的,以美国陆军将军Hiram M. Chittenden 为命名,当时是北美最大的船闸系统,现在仍然是最繁忙的船闸之一,每年有10万多船只通过。1978年,ballard 船闸被列为美国历史文物保护名列。免费参观,是西雅图景点之一,也是科普教育的好场所,特别受小孩们的喜欢。 上图为淡水水面的三文鱼湾(salmon bay),通往联合湖和华盛顿湖, 水面较高。 船闸的另一面是咸水通道,水面较谈水水面低20-22英尺,平时闸门紧闭,海水不犯湖水。 正巧一只游艇从普吉海湾这边过来,要通过船闸到湖水那边去。游艇先进入船道,将海水道的闸拦下,船只便被“锁”在了船道里,然后放水,使海水面与淡水面持平。 10几分钟后,船闸2边水位相等,游艇随之升高了起来。 船闸打开了,后面那座楼是控制塔,有点像世博中国馆哈 … Continue reading
